Navigation Training with Will Oxley

Whether you are starting out as a navigator or already a pro, these expert-led courses are designed to enhance your skills in weather routing, fundamentatal navigation and strategic sailing.

Welcome to the site offering online navigation training, e-books, and videos. Expedition navigation software is the pre-eminent race navigation tool in the Anglo speaking world. The online training offered here starts with developing skills in using Expedition Software.

For many years Will Oxley wrote magazine articles about race navigation with a long term view to one day use these articles as the basis for a book. Then at the end of 2012, shortly after completing the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race, Will managed to crash his mountain bike and fracture his neck! During his “time- off” from sailing he managed to complete his first book: Modern Race Navigation.  This e-book is still a great place to start for those wanting to understand and learn about Modern Race Navigation.

More recently, with the shift to online learning, Will developed training videos and online courses for beginners right through to professional navigators. Again, adversity was put to good use and Will used the time off from sailing, during the COVID pandemic, to develop this web site.

For intermediate to experienced navigators the 2024 Expedition Version 12 course video provides insights into the new features in V12 along with a comprehensive review of the optimal routing process.

For beginners, the “Gentle Introduction” video is a great place to start. The Gentle Introduction e-book is a great companion text to the video.

If you are new to the site and Expedition, the “Omnibus Plan” is highly recommended and includes:

  • 12 months access to the 2024 Expedition Gentle Introduction and V12 videos
  • ALL racing videos
